Native Union MM01HMoshi Moshi Retro Handset for iPhone, iPad, Blackberry and Mobile Phones
This is a great headset. It is solidly made and very attractive. The audio quality is superb. The surface of the handset is not hard and slick like the old handsets it is made to resemble, instead it is covered in a rubber-like material that feels good in your hand, against your ear, and grips nicely against your shirt if you hold the headset between ear and shoulder. (And another thing while the packaging of the product is really not a big deal – it is fantastic. Velcro tabs hold down one side of the box, once that’s opened, there’s a little satin pull-tab to open a cellophane and cardboard window over the headset which is cradled in black foam. It just shows you how much thought Native Union put into every bit of the Moshi Moshi.)
I could not find an adapter anywhere for the proprietary headset-input used on my phone, (note to Samsung users – NONE of the 20-pin/3.5mm adapters sold support the microphone half of a hands-free headset. You get audio, but they won’t be able to hear you. Hey Samsung? Screw you.) but a single email to the Native Union support line (support@nativeunion.com) and they sent one immediately.
Great customer service. This whole Moshi Moshi thing has been a pleasure.

The unboxing of the Moshi Moshi #01 handset is almost ceremonial. Open the front flap, which is secured with hook-and-loop dots, to reveal the totally unexpected, Japanese-style gift presentation packaging, which can be seen in the helpful customer-submitted photos at the top of the product page.
The handset itself is a pleasure to touch and hold, made of that nice rubbery plastic so often used these days on everything from scissors to toothbrushes, very well-balanced and the perfect weight. The quality of manufacture is evidently flawless.
The sound quality is quite good both listening and speaking. There is an on-off button that is used to answer calls but volume is controlled by the telephone. It is so simple to use that the directions are not necessary–just plug it in and start talking.
There are several practical advantages to using the Moshi Moshi: comfort, being able to look at the phone while talking on it, avoiding interference with the antenna, and avoiding any theoretical problems caused by holding an electronic device a short distance from brain tissue for extended periods of time.
My laptop has flip-clock screensaver. This device has the same sensibility and everything should be designed so well.
It is also available in black: Moshi Moshi Retro Handset (Soft Touch Black).

Batman: [on Batmobile Batphone] Commissioner?
Commissioner Gordon: [on Batphone in his office] Yes, Batman?
Batman: Could you arrange for the immediate delivery of four one hundred pound sacks of sodium dichlorite to the Batcopter? I’ll explain later.
Commissioner Gordon: Consider it done.
If this were Back to the Future, batman could use this really cool red Moshi Moshi handset connected to his iPhone to speak with Commissioner Gordon.
Sadly, the Moshi Moshi doesn’t light up red like the real batphone, but it does remind me of that phone.
What a funny funny phone accessory. You’d never imagine this, but it works. There’s some thing very strange and exciting about holding an old school handset while talking on a cell phone. The plastic is nice and satiny soft, it feels good in your hand. There’s a little tiny button on the inside of the handle to answer or end calls. And it has a stealth function, that button will start up your iTunes or music on your phone, so you can listen to tunes while holding the phone.
The sound quality is passable (music actually sounds pretty bad). The interesting thing about this handset, you can press it up to your ear and it does block out extraneous sound. I’m not sure where to put my phone while I hold this handset, so it’s a bit like a Whopper – it takes two hands to handle the Moshi Moshi.
As a funny piece, I like this thing. The paradox of ultra retro handset and ultra modern iPhone is pretty cool. My phone is red, and does look a lot like a red hot line. Is it really worth this price point, um, not so sure.
Oh, the packaging – it is so very very cool. I will try to post some pictures. Moshi Moshi is apparently words Japanese use to answer the phone. Japanese / French / US connections.
‘By the way, Batman, have you seen millionaire Bruce Wayne? He doesn’t answer the phone at his stately manor.’ Maybe Batman is using his iPhone 4 and holding it in the right spot.
