iPod shuffle: The First Music Player that Talks to You

The World’s Smallest Music Player
To create the world’s smallest music player, we moved the controls from iPod shuffle to the earphone cord. This makes iPod shuffle smaller than ever, and the controls are right where you can reach them. So when you want to play, pause, or skip to the next tune, you don’t have to fumble for your iPod shuffle–just follow the cord and press a button.

The First Music Player that Talks to You
VoiceOver will surely be the next big hit on your iPod shuffle. Say you’re listening to a song and want to know the title or the artist. Just press a button, and VoiceOver tells you. You can even hear the names of your playlists. And when your battery needs charging, VoiceOver tells you that, too.

Easy-Access Controls
The controls are located on the right earphone cord. With command central strategically placed in this more convenient location, you can navigate your music–and activate the VoiceOver feature–without taking your eyes off your run, your ride, or whatever you’re doing. iPod shuffle includes these easy-access controls, but you can also use headphones with similar controls from manufacturers like Scosche, Klipsch, V-MODA, and Belkin.

Your Music Library … to Go
iPod shuffle is now available in both 2 GB and 4 GB capacities. So you have plenty of room to store hours and hours of music–up to 1,000 songs with the 4 GB model.2 That’s a load of essentials for your workout or commute. And there’s room for multiple playlists and audiobooks, too.

Multiple Playlists
You’ve probably made multiple playlists in iTunes. One for your commute. One for the gym. One for just chilling out. Now you can sync playlists on your computer with iPod shuffle, and play the perfect mix for your activity or mood. VoiceOver tells you the name of each playlist, so it’s easy to switch between them and find the one you want without looking.

Let’s Talk Color
The anodized aluminum enclosure makes iPod shuffle sleek and durable. It’s even more colorful in gleaming pink, blue, green, black, or silver. And making its debut: the special edition iPod shuffle in polished stainless steel (Talk about rock star treatment). Even the iPod shuffle clip rocks. It attaches securely to your shirt, jacket, workout gear, and backpack, making iPod shuffle the perfect fashion tech-cessory. And yes, there’s still room for personalized engraving.

Multiple Languages
A French love song. A Spanish bolero. An Italian cantata. Your music library has songs from all over the world. That’s why VoiceOver speaks 20 different languages. So it can tell you song titles and artists in the correct languages.

To Shuffle or Not to Shuffle
The shuffle switch has three positions. Flip it to the left, and you’ll hear your music in a refreshingly random way. Flip it to the middle, and your songs play in order. Or flip to the right to turn iPod shuffle off.

The headphones stop working when they come into contact with sweat. It’s been a widespread problem. (Google new apple headphones sweat)

The volume controls and tracking controls stop working. Since there are no controls on the Shuffle itself, you cannot change the volume or change songs while running.

The Shuffle is useless for runners. I am very disappointed.

  2. I am about to return my second new iPod shuffle. I wasn’t fond of the new design with controls on the headphones because I like to use 3rd party headphone (like those that sit on the ear and not in it), but as it turned out that was the least of my concerns. Sweat just a little bit and the thing starts to go haywire — sometimes I cannot change the volume at all, or the voice over randomly pops on to tell me the song or the playlist, or sometimes it just stops working altogether. The first time I thought I had a lemon and returned it. But my second one has the same problem.

From reviews I’ve read on Apple’s official Support page, *lots* of people are having the same problem. I guess that controller in the headphones cannot handle any moisture.

I just paid a lot more money for an older shuffle that has only half the memory. Sometimes Apple screws up, and this is one of those times.

If you plan to use your iPod for exercise, do *not* buy this model until Apple fixes the problem.

It looks great, the size is great, but if you sweat this is the worst product on the market!!!!!! If the remote gets wet, which it will if you workout, the thing starts acting crazy, and until it dries out, it will not work. Belkin makes a $20 adapter, but you would think Apple would have tested it on someone that sweats! There are rumors that it is going to be recalled because the reviews.

  4. This is my first real review on Amazon and I’m making it because I’m ridiculously pissed that I spent money on this piece of crap.

Like most people here, I bought this specifically so that I could take it to the gym. After a few trips to the gym it didn’t matter how fully charged the main body of the shuffle was because the control box was useless when sweat got into it. The light would blink, the playlist would skip/cycle through all the songs and the volume control was useless.

I had purchased another unit for my gf and “borrowed” her headset and for the moment I’m satisfied that I can use mine again – but I’m really annoyed at the idea that when this headset goes, both shuffles will be useless. I’m definitely not getting another and I hope that this review discourages anyone else from buying one.

I generally love Apple’s products but I’m really REALLY disgusted by this one.

This is the kind of product that comes down the production line when a company thinks that it is infallible. What a shameful product. Putting the controls in the earphones? Surely you jest. Have had the product for less two weeks, the headphones have worked as they should one time. Remember Apple…you were once on the fringes of bankrupcy, don’t think that it cannot happen again.
